Doig River First Nation Initiates Public and Stakeholder Engagement on a Land Use Planning Project with the Province of British Columbia

Press Release

February 4, 2026

FORT ST. JOHN, BC, – Doig River First Nation (DRFN), together with the Province of British Columbia invites input into the Joint Land Use Plan being developed in northeastern BC. Representatives of DRFN and the Province of BC hosted meetings with municipalities this month as part of its ongoing public engagement effort to advance a Joint Land Use Plan (JLUP). The JLUP will guide restoration and protection of important lands, including K’ih tsaa?dze Tribal Park, while supporting responsible resource activity across northeast BC.

Doig River First Nation and the Province of British Columbia are committed to an inclusive and accessible engagement process to ensure that First Nations, tenure holders, industry partners, non-government organizations, local governments, and the public are kept informed and engaged throughout the plan’s development.

The JLUP integrates DRFN’s Land Use Plan, provincial priorities, and public input to ensure environmental, cultural, and economic values are reflected in project decisions. DRFN emphasizes shared interests: the Nation participates in resource development and seeks balance — not shutdowns — so the land can heal and thrive for future generations.

Significant restoration projects are already underway in the region, with K’ih tsaa?dze Tribal Park as a central focus for healing after decades of industrial impact.

Community engagement is at the heart of the JLUP. Please take the JLUP survey and share your opinion. An online survey allows anyone to provide input into the Doig River First Nation-B.C. Joint Land Use Plan. The survey will be open from Feb. 3 to March 3, 2026. The survey can be found here: JLUP survey

Input will be summarized in a What We Heard report, to be shared with stakeholders and the public in spring 2026.

Municipal meetings are free and open to all community members. Attendees will:

⦁ Learn about DRFN and BC’s Joint Land Use planning process

⦁ Share feedback directly with DRFN and BC representatives

We invite everyone to join, connect, and learn more about the land use planning work we are undertaking with the Province of BC. A Q&A period will follow each session. Your voice matters, and we look forward to hearing from you.
