First Nation asks province to put Kʼómoks treaty ratification on hold – Times Colonist

Wei Wai Kum Chief Christopher Roberts says traditional protocols would be broken if the Kʼómoks treaty goes to the legislature this week, as planned.

Representatives from First Nations across Vancouver Island gathered at the Royal B.C. Museum Sunday to support the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in its attempts to press pause on the provincial ratification of another nation’s treaty.

The Wei Wai Kum First Nation, located near Campbell River, wants the Kʼómoks First Nation Treaty to add amendments that recognize the Wei Wai Kum’s core territory, that leave one contested area as a reserve, and that require binding protocols to protect Wei Wai Kum interests.
