REGINA — At a time when the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is pressing for a national inquiry into violence against indigenous women, its leader praised the appointment of Canada’s first aboriginal women to lead an RCMP division.
With a nod to First Nations traditions and RCMP pomp and pageantry, Brenda Butterworth-Carr was officially sworn in Wednesday as the new commanding officer for Saskatchewan’s F-Division.
“This is history being made here in Treaty 4 territory in Regina,” AFN Chief Shawn Atleo said in addressing those at the change of command ceremony.
“With the first aboriginal woman to accomplish this level of leadership tells the young people, and especially the girls … that anything is absolutely possible if you set your mind and your heart to it,” he added.
