Fort McPherson RCMP are working with members of the community and search and rescue in the search for a missing man.
In the early hours of Tuesday, September 6, 2016, Fort McPherson RCMP were advised of a missing man. They received a report that a hunter was overdue. The man had set out on Monday, September 5 at approximately 9:30 AM from James Creek camp to go hunting. He had advised he would return by supper time. When he did not return, members of the camp searched the immediate area until the early hours of Tuesday morning. When they were unable to find the man, they contacted the police.
Thirty-seven (37) year old Lanny Stewart is described as:
- Aboriginal Male
- 17 cm or 5’ 10”
- 68 kg or 149 lbs
- medium build
- black hair
- brown eyes
Lanny Stewart was seen heading out on a quad from James Creek camp in the direction of the Valley behind the camp. The quad is described as a blue, Yamaha 350. Lanny was wearing a hoodie, yellow/black snowmachine jacket, jeans, ballcap and boots. He had a hunting rifle and extra fuel.
Members from James Creek Camp, citizens of Fort McPherson, Civil Aviation Search and Rescue (CASARA) and local helicopter companies are assisting in the search. James Creek camp is approximately 60 km’s south of the Dempster Highway.
“Weather conditions of blowing snow and gusty winds have hampered the search efforts thus far. Searchers continue to search as the weather conditions allow,” states C/M Marie York-Condon, Northwest Territories RCMP Spokesperson.
