Government of Yukon and Connective sign short term agreement to maintain shelter services

Press Release

The Government of Yukon has temporarily extended its agreement with Connective Support Society to continue operations at 405 Alexander Street, Housing First at Wood Street and Whitehorse Residential Services through June 30, 2025.

During the three-month period, the Government of Yukon will continue to work with Connective, the Council of Yukon First Nations, Yukon First Nations governments and community partners to refine the long-term framework for shelter and housing services, improve culturally relevant programming, safety and on-site services. Additionally, the Government of Yukon is organizing a summit with the Council of Yukon First Nations and all First Nations governments to identify how the model can change inside 405 Alexander to better meet client and community needs.

Between April 1, 2024, and February 28, 2025, nightly shelter occupancy at 405 Alexander fluctuated between 39 and 52 individuals, excluding residents of the Housing First units on the second and third floors. This short-term extension ensures the continued delivery of critical shelter and housing services for these and other vulnerable Yukoners as long-term solutions for this critical service are determined.

Clients will not experience service disruptions during this period.

Quick facts

  • This extension maintains current service levels at 405 Alexander, the Housing First program and Whitehorse Residential Services, which provide stable housing and case management for individuals at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
  • This short-term measure ensures service continuity while the Government of Yukon works with partners to finalize long-term shelter agreements.
  • Operational improvements at 405 Alexander in recent months include strengthened safety and oversight, including enhanced training, washroom checks, new harm reduction measures and staff security enhancements.
  • Housing First units are governed under the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (RLTA), ensuring tenant rights are upheld during the extension period.
