Grand Chief Derek Nepinak supports the WPS Board recommendation for Danny Smyth to be appointed as the new Chief of Police.
WireService.ca Media Release (10/25/2016) Treaty One Territory – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Derek Nepinak supports the decision of the Board of the Winnipeg Police Services that recommends promoting Danny Smyth as the new Chief of Police.
Grand Chief Nepinak stated “I am pleased to hear Danny Smyth has been recommended to take a leading role as the new Chief of Police for the City of Winnipeg. I have personally witnessed his commitment and passion for the City of Winnipeg and surrounding areas. He has made himself available to attend different conferences and events including an AMC Chief’s Assembly to speak about the importance of protecting the people. I fully support his appointment.”
Deputy Chief Smyth has worked with the Winnipeg Police Service for 30 years and was recently the Deputy Chief of Investigation Services. He has the expertise experience working in Investigation Service that includes homicide, major crimes, organized crimes, and forensic, intelligence and technology division.
“Mr Smyth’s experience and expertise are ideal for being the new Chief of Police. This is especially true at a time with over representation of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Winnipeg and Manitoba. I look forward to continue developing a positive and respectful working relationship with Smyth in his new position,” concluded Grand Chief Derek Nepinak.
Danny Smyth will be formally appointed as Chief of Police on November 4, 2016 at a public meeting of the WPS Board.
