Inquest into the Death of Ina Matawapit Announced

Dr. David Eden, Regional Supervising Coroner for Inquests, today announced that an inquest will be held into the death of Ina Matawapit.

Ms. Matawapit, 37, died on June 7, 2012 at the Weagamow Lake Nursing Station following a transfer from a police vehicle while in custody. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Matawapit’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

Details regarding the date and location will be provided when the information becomes available. It is anticipated that this inquest will be held in the fall of 2017 in Sioux Lookout.

Dr. Michael Wilson will preside as inquest coroner and Jodie-Lynn Waddilove and Josh McKay will be counsel to the coroner.
