There has been a great deal of misinformation out there about Pacific Northwest LNG’s proposal and the exploratory work they are doing on Lelu Island. Here are the facts:

• We are not in active negotiations with Pacific Northwest LNG.
• The occupation on Lelu Island is a legitimate activity that is supported by many in the community.
• Pacific Northwest LNG did not supply the community with a comprehensive project description or with the scope of their planned work.
• Pacific Northwest LNG does not understand the concept of social license on Lax Kw’alaams’ territory even after two and half years of dialogue.

As part of our due diligence as elected leaders, we want to make sure you understand where things are at on this historic and important issue. This is not the time to be divided, but rather to be united so we can make sure industry understands our traditional law.

Our traditional laws require that we protect our fisheries, our environment and our people for future generations. Lax Kw’alaams cannot make a decision that adversely affects our resources. What we need now is community solidarity in the face of external pressure from government and industry.
