Manitoba Government Announces Nineteen King’s Counsel Appointments

Press Release

The Manitoba government has appointed 19 Manitoba lawyers as King’s counsel (KC) in recognition of outstanding contributions to the practise of law, Justice Minister Matt Wiebe announced today.

“I offer my sincere appreciation to all those appointed as King’s counsel for their leadership in the legal profession and their service to Manitobans,” said Wiebe. “I want to congratulate appointees for this well-deserved honour.”

Murray Sinclair received the KC designation earlier this month in recognition of his achievements in the legal profession and his work on behalf of Manitobans and Canadians, noted the minister.

Another 18 appointments were made in August 2023:

  • Joseph Barnsley
  • Frank Lavitt
  • Fay-Lynn Katz
  • Bryan Schwartz
  • Sandra Kliman
  • Michael Richards
  • Glenn Joynt
  • Steven Kohn
  • David Wright
  • Kenneth Mandzuik
  • Jody Langhan
  • Katherine Bueti
  • Wendy Martin White
  • Laurelle Harris
  • Grant Driedger
  • Jeremy Akerstream
  • Geraldine Wiebe

King’s counsel is an honorary title given to a lawyer by the lieutenant-governor in council, based on recommendations made by the minister following consultation with an advisory council. To be considered for the title, the lawyer must have demonstrated outstanding practice, operated with integrity and leadership, fostered excellence in the profession and been in practice for at least 10 years.

The advisory council includes representatives from the judiciary, legal community and the public. It is chaired by Chief Justice Marianne Rivoalen of the Manitoba Court of Appeal and includes representatives from the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba Bar Association.

The minister noted a ceremony will be held honouring the appointees for 2023 and 2024 on Sept. 12. The application window for KC appointments will open early in the new year.
