Media advisory – Protecting Broadback river valley forest: Major statement by Waswanipi Chief at COMEX public hearings on proposed construction of logging access roads

WASWANIPI, QC, Jan. 18, 2016 – Marcel Happyjack, chief of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi, invites journalists to attend the public hearings of the Comité d’examen des répercussions sur l’environnement et le milieu social (COMEX), where he will make a statement on the construction of two logging access roads on the territory of the Broadback river valley forest. The Waswanipi council and Chief Happyjack are calling for the complete protection of this forest, which plays a vital role in preserving the Cree way of life and contributes to protecting the woodland caribou and other species on Eeyou Istchee ancestral lands. These two roads, which are about 126 km long, are located at km 105 of the James Bay Highway (Route 109) and Lac Quénonisca. Chief Happy jack will be available for interviews.
