Kenjgewin Teg recently hosted ‘Minaajtoodaa Niigaan E’ni-zhaaying: A Gathering of Gratitude, Service, and Achievement,’ an evening dedicated to honouring the employees whose dedication, leadership, and service help shape Kenjgewin Teg and support student success.
The celebration brought together staff, leadership, and guests for an evening of reflection and recognition. The evening opened with welcoming remarks from Dr. Beverley Roy, President of Kenjgewin Teg, followed by an opening thanksgiving and prayer from Elder in Residence Marilyn Debassige.
The Biisineh Drum Group started the celebration in a good way, with Kenjgewin Teg student Bradley Sophocleous entering with the eagle staff, setting a meaningful tone for the gathering before guests shared a meal together.
Past Employee Recognition Acknowledgements
During the evening, Kenjgewin Teg recognized several past employees whose work helped shape the organization and contributed to its growth over the years. These individuals were acknowledged for the lasting impact they have made on programs, students, and the broader community.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Employee Recognition Awards, which celebrate staff members whose dedication and contributions make a meaningful difference within the organization.
Outstanding Service in Education Award
Recipient: Emily Deegan – Academic Technologist
Emily Deegan was recognized for her outstanding support of both students and faculty through her work with digital learning technologies. Through one-on-one guidance, training, and the development of helpful technical resources, Emily plays an essential role in ensuring that online learning tools and course content are accessible and easy to navigate. Her expertise and quiet dedication have a significant impact on the learning experience across Kenjgewin Teg.
Distinguished Service in Education Award
Recipient: Krista Payette – Alumni and Post-Graduate Navigator
Krista Payette was honoured for her exceptional commitment to supporting students and strengthening connections with alumni. Through her work guiding learners as they explore educational and career pathways, and through initiatives such as the development of a new alumni database, Krista continues to foster strong relationships between Kenjgewin Teg and its graduates. Her enthusiasm, advocacy, and willingness to support colleagues and students alike embody the spirit of this award.
Contribution to Education Award
Recipient: Melanie Manitowabi – Research and Special Projects Lead
Melanie Manitowabi was recognized for her leadership and contributions to innovative research initiatives, including the AELMC Project. Through her work, she continues to advance First Nation research and support the development of new educational initiatives, including future micro-credentials. Although she was unable to attend the gathering, her meaningful contributions to education at Kenjgewin Teg were warmly acknowledged.

The evening also included recognition of employees and board members whose years of service reflect a deep commitment to Kenjgewin Teg’s mission and community.

The evening concluded with reflections from Ann Cada, representing the Waawaaskonenh Foundation and a former member of Kenjgewin Teg’s Board of Directors. A closing prayer was offered by Elder Marilyn Debassige, followed by a closing song from the Biisineh Drum Group as Bradley Sophocleous carried the eagle staff out, bringing the gathering to a meaningful close.
Minaajtoodaa Niigaan E’ni-zhaaying served as a reminder that Kenjgewin Teg’s strength comes from the people who contribute their time, knowledge, and care to the organization each day. Through their commitment to education, community, and Anishinaabe values, staff and leadership continue to support learners and help guide the organization forward.
