MNO: Indigenous Veterans Day 2022

Press Release

November 8, 2022

Today we mark Indigenous Veterans Day and proudly salute our Metis, First Nation and Inuit servicemen and women..

In this era of reconciliation, honouring the contributions and sacrifices of these brave veterans is key to greater understanding and healing.

Métis involvement in the defense of Canada began before there was a Canada — in the War of 1812. Métis have also served in both World Wars, the Korean Conflict, Gulf War, and Afghanistan, and in many Peacekeeping missions around the globe.

Métis people continue to play an important role in the Forces and serve our nation proudly, both at home and abroad.

Today we are reminded that our democracies, both Métis and Canadian, are built on the service, sacrifice and dedication of Métis Veterans — women and men who have served us all so well.

On this national day of reflection, we extend our sincere gratitude to all Indigenous people who have served and continue to serve.

Thank you and Marsii.
