The Government of Yukon announces a 30-year land lease agreement has been finalized with Kluane First Nation to support the development of new government staff housing units on Settlement Land in the Copper Joe subdivision of Burwash Landing.
The land lease has enabled construction of a duplex to begin this summer. Once completed, the duplex will be allocated to teachers employed at the new community school, Kêts’ádań Kų̀, also currently under construction in Burwash Landing. This project builds on a vision of creating more duplexes over time to support the growing needs of the community and school.
The staff housing duplex features two 991 square-foot, fully accessible two-bedroom units and will exceed energy efficiency ratings by 40 per cent of National Energy Building Code requirements. Construction of the duplex is anticipated to be completed this winter.
This partnership reflects the Government of Yukon’s commitment to supporting Yukon First Nations and fostering economic outcomes that benefit local communities and businesses. The initiative also aligns with objectives in Creating Home, Yukon Housing Corporation’s new five-year strategic plan, strengthening community wellbeing and building a sustainable future to better the lives of Yukoners.
The construction of dedicated staff housing is a critical step to ensure the successful recruitment and retention of qualified teachers, enabling them to live within the community they serve. By providing quality housing for our teachers, we are investing in the future of our children and our community. This is another step forward in our journey of self-determination and cultural revitalization.

Minister responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation Ranj Pillai
Thank you to Kluane First Nation for partnering with us as we prepare for the opening of the Kêts’ádań Kù School. Having staff housing in place is an essential step in supporting this much-needed school and the community of Burwash Landing. I’m excited to see the first staff move into this new housing and even more excited for the day students walk through the doors and begin their journey in a school designed to support and inspire them.
