Nominations Open for Commissioner’s Arts Award

Press Release

Iqaluit, Nunavut (October 20, 2025) – The Honorable Eva Aariak, Commissioner of Nunavut today announced the opening of nominations for the 2025 Nunavut Commissioner’s Arts Award to honor outstanding artists in Nunavut.

“The Nunavut Commissioner’s Arts Award gives me the opportunity to recognize Nunavut artists who have brought world-wide recognition of our unique history, language and culture,” said Commissioner Aariak. “It is a privilege to recognize Inuit artistic expression, honoring artists who release their knowledge and vision through their art. Nunavut artists stimulate and strengthen our economy and encourage future artists to develop their skills to produce high quality work.”

The award, a cash prize of $10,000, is presented annually to an established Nunavut artist who has made a significant contribution to the arts during a lengthy career. The artist may have distinguished themselves in visual arts of all forms, performing arts or literature.

All nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee who will make recommendations to the Commissioner of Nunavut. Members of the selection committee will be chosen based on their recognized expertise and experience in the areas of arts and culture in Nunavut.

Candidates for the award will be judged on their contributions to the arts, quality and impact of their work and their efforts to mentor emerging artists. Individuals may only receive the award once.

Artists wanting more information on the award should contact the Office of the Commissioner of Nunavut.

The deadline for nominations is December 15, 2025.
