Press Release
Flags are flying at half-mast at Nunatsiavut Government buildings to mourn the 215 children whose remains were discovered last week buried on the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, BC. The flags will remain at half-mast for 215 hours – one hour for each child.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those whose lives were tragically and senselessly taken,” says Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe. “The pain and suffering inflicted upon Indigenous peoples throughout Canada at the hands of the residential school system is very real, especially for those who are left behind to try and pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. We call on the Government of Canada to ensure all necessary supports are put in place to help survivors get through these trying and difficult times.”
