(Canada-Korean-Pastor)

Despite a grim account of his imprisonment, the mood was joyful as a Canadian pastor freed from a North Korean prison addressed the congregation at a Toronto-area church Sunday.

During his first public appearance since arriving home, Hyeon Soo Lim described his two years in isolation, where he says he did gruelling physical labour that landed him in hospital on several occasions.

After the service, Lim told reporters he was grateful for the support of his congregation, and for the Canadian government officials who secured his release.

Lim had been sentenced to life in prison with hard labour for alleged anti-state activities, but was released this month on what the North Korean government described as “sick bail.” (The Canadian Press)

(Double-Motorcycle-Fatal)

Two people are dead following a crash involving a van and a motorcycle in Tecumseh, just southeast of Windsor.

Police say the collision occurred at an intersection Sunday afternoon, and that both the driver and the passenger on the motorcycle died at the scene.

Investigators say the driver of the van was arrested and criminal charges are pending.

No names have been released. (The Canadian Press)

(Motorcycle-Fatal-Ottawa)

The O-P-P says a 49 year old Gatineau man was killed when his motorcycle hit a guardrail on Highway 417 southwest of Ottawa.

The crash happened early Sunday morning.

No other details were immediately released. (The Canadian Press)

(Tweed-Death)

Provincial police say they have a 36-year-old man in custody after finding the body of a 55-year-old man in a residence in Tweed.

Officers were called to the home Saturday morning.

Police haven’t released the name of the deceased man, or the suspect, and there’s no word yet on the cause of death. (The Canadian Press)

(Sandy-Lake-Fires)

Fire rangers say Sandy Lake First Nation in northwestern Ontario is under threat from forest fires.

The first fire started Thursday and continued to spread over the weekend.

Rangers say at least six other fires have also ignited in the area in the past three or four days.

Aircraft from both Ontario and Manitoba have been helping ground crews battle the fires. (CKDR)

(Durham-Beaches)

Four beaches in the Durham region were deemed unsafe for swimming over the weekend.

Blue-green algae, high water levels, and bacteria were blamed for the beaches’ poor rankings.

Public health officials recommend checking safety standards before swimming.

An American study released this summer says harmful blooms of blue-green algae have appeared in the Gulf of Mexico, the Great Lakes, the Pacific Northwest and the Atlantic coast. (CKDO)
