Premier King recognizes National Indigenous Veterans Day

“On this National Indigenous Veterans Day, and every day, we reflect and commemorate the incredible courage and sacrifices of Indigenous veterans. We remember and honour those who never made it home and those whose lives were forever changed, including their families and communities.

During the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Korean War, more than 10,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit people selflessly served and fought for the rights and freedoms that they themselves did not yet have at that time. The important contributions of Indigenous veterans reach far beyond Canada’s war efforts to our country’s peacekeeping efforts, helping to ensure the safety and security of citizens around the world.

Indigenous people have always been there to stand up and fight for our country and for the protection of peace and security that everyone rightly deserves. They have shown immeasurable leadership, bravery and commitment in the face of unimaginable conflict.

On November 8, I encourage all Islanders to take the time to honour our Indigenous veterans who have served and continue to serve. We thank them for all they have done for us so that we, and many others around the world, may live in peace.
