Statement from Premier Wab Kinew on Louis Riel Day

Press Release

February 16, 2026

Today, families across Manitoba are heading outdoors, visiting family and taking the time to reconnect. Louis Riel Day is an opportunity to spend time with the people we love and to reflect on the story of our province.

This day is named in honour of Manitoba’s honorary first premier, Louis Riel, a leader whose vision helped shape Manitoba into the province we call home. Manitoba entered Confederation with protections for language, culture and rights that continue to define us today.

For me, this holiday is also personal. It is about being with family, sharing stories and remembering the strength of Manitoba has always come from our communities.

The same spirit that brought people together in 1870 lives on today. It is there when communities come together to celebrate culture. It is there when we support one another through challenges and it is there in the quiet pride we feel in calling Manitoba home.

As Manitobans enjoy this long weekend, I encourage everyone to take a moment to learn more about our shared history and to honour the legacy of our first premier Louis Riel and the Red River Métis people. Their resilience and leadership helped create a province where different cultures, languages and traditions could thrive side by side.

From my family to yours, whether you are skating at The Forks, taking in the music and spirit of Festival du Voyageur or cheering on Team Canada, I wish you a safe and meaningful Louis Riel Day.
