Stay safe on the land this spring

Nunavut Emergency Management advises all residents and travelers of increased hazards during spring thaw conditions. As snow and ice melt, travel conditions can change quickly.
Slushy terrain, thinning ice, and open rivers have already made conditions hazardous in some areas. Multiple search and rescue missions requiring helicopter support have recently been required due to deteriorating conditions and changing ice patterns as ground travel has become increasingly difficult.
Safety Guidelines for Spring Travel:
- Avoid non-essential travel on the land during periods of slush, deep melting, or uncertain terrain.
- Inform someone of your travel plans and expected return.
- Do not rely solely on traditional snow routes – they may no longer be safe.
- Carry emergency communication tools – SPOT devices can be signed out from your local hamlet office.
- Check weather and condition updates before going out on the land.
- Bring survival supplies, including food, fuel, shelter, and proper clothing for wet, cold, and windy conditions.
- Be prepared to turn back if terrain becomes unsafe or unstable.
