Thousands of Holman-era prints in Ontario storage could be financial boost Ulukhaktok’s art scene needs – CBC

Collection of more than 20,000 items appraised at $4.1M has been for sale for years

Print-making was a thriving industry in Ulukhaktok, N.W.T., from the early 1960s to 2000, when the community was known as Holman.

Artist Mary Okheena remembers when the print shop at the heart of that scene closed in the early 2000s.

She doesn’t know why, exactly, it was shut down. But she does remember the building gave her the physical space she needed to be creative, that making prints had been her livelihood, and that it was something she loved.
